Everyone on YouTube seems to be talking about plug-in solar right now — so here’s a proper update on my EcoFlow STREAM Ultra X. I got it earlier in the year along with a couple of 450W panels, stuck them on the flat roof and ran my home office off-grid from it. Last time I reviewed it, loads of you couldn’t get hold of one because it was out of stock — the good news is EcoFlow now have plenty in stock, so I wanted to share how it’s held up, answer the questions you left in the comments, and (just for fun) plug the car in to grab a few free miles.
In this one I cover how it’s performed after months of daily use, the one niggle I’ve had (the Wi-Fi dropping out), how the two 450W panels have actually performed, and all your big questions: do you need the app, is it legal to plug into your house in the UK, anti-islanding and safety, earthing, brackets and weighting the panels, and whether the numbers actually stack up.
Quick heads-up on the legal bit: from 27 August 2026, solar panels with a compliant micro-inverter can be plugged into a socket in the UK — but batteries like this one are NOT covered by that change yet, so you still can’t legally feed power back into your house or the grid from it. You’re completely fine charging it from a socket overnight and using that power through the day off its own sockets — it’s only the feeding-back part that’s off limits for now. Fingers crossed the regs catch up with batteries soon.
