Mike has driven across the country in an EV three times now — the first in 2023, back when non-Tesla drivers couldn’t use Superchargers at all. It was bumpier then. The hardware has changed fast.
Twelve to fourteen minutes for a full charge on an 800-volt car. Twenty-plus on most others. And a charging tip that sounds wrong until you understand the physics: don’t top up to 80%. Take 69% here, 41% at the next stop, and let the car’s computer figure it out. Batteries charge fastest through the first two-thirds of the cycle, and the route planner already knows that.
You trust a calculator with long division. Trust the car.
Coming up: a charging quiz, some political road stories from several decades of bouncing around the country, and Buc-ee’s in Amarillo.
