The Tesla Cybertruck is unlike any truck before it, and although some are attracted to the truck for that very reason, the way the truck is built is also very different from traditional trucks. When it comes to the structure of the Cybertruck, no compromises can be made given the high levels of claimed capabilities.
Not long ago we had a video from WhistlinDiesel where he pushed the Cybertruck to its breaking point, and quite literally broke the truck. The frame snapped at the rear tow hitch, leaving many questions to be answered. Of course this destructive testing included things like dropping the truck on concrete culverts, strapping explosives to it and getting serious air time.
But now we have a second video, and this time it’s from Zack, of JerryRigEverything. Zack decided to attach a 20k lb excavator to the back of his Cybertruck and exert lateral force until it broke. At the same time, he did have a tool attached that measures the lbs of force in increments of 5 lbs.
During this test, the Cybertruck was held in place with another tractor in the front, and not given a chance to relieve the pressures to ensure the test would complete. And sure enough, after enough force, the frame did indeed snap in similar fashion to the previous one from WhistlinDiesel.
The Cybertruck is rated for 11k lbs towing capacity with 1,100 lbs of maximum tongue weight. It is important to note that the test in this example would be related to the 1,100 lbs tongue weight limit. At failure, the measured force was 10,400 lbs, meaning the frame snapped at 9 times its rated limit.
It is tempting for haters to get excited at the results, but this is actually a clearly impressive result for the Cybertruck. Being able to withstand 9 times it rated limit on the hitch is incredible, and is a testament to the extreme engineering that was done to make the truck perform the way it does.
The F-450 is the highest rated, strongest truck on the market when considering towing capability alone. With up to 30k lbs towing capacity at the hitch, this truck truly is a monster. But even this monster is limited to 3,000 lbs at the hitch, meaning the Cybertruck failure was 3.5 times higher than the limit on even the highest rated truck on the market.
So much is needed to understand about towing to really figure out what is and is not important about these tests. We now have a total of 3 examples of this happening, 2 of which were destructive tests, and the 3rd was after a Cybertruck was rear ended. So far there have been no spontaneous failures, and there is no reason to believe there would be a failure like this by simply towing within the limitations outlined by the manufacturer.
