The country’s deputy minister for technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, revealed in an exclusive interview with Reuters that Tesla executives recently held talks with Indian officials to discuss various topics, including incentives for car and battery manufacturing. As Tesla explores the Indian market, these discussions signal their strong interest in India as a production and innovation base.

Chandrasekhar, a high-ranking official in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration, stated that the Indian government is fully committed to supporting Tesla’s ambitions and investment objectives in India. This marks the first public comment by an Indian government official regarding the talks with Tesla. The discussions revolved not only around manufacturing vehicles but also energy, manufacturing technology, and the possibility of producing EV batteries in India.

Tesla’s proposal includes the establishment of a factory in India to manufacture electric vehicles (EVs). However, the scope of their plans beyond vehicle production is yet to be disclosed. Chandrasekhar emphasized that the talks covered a wide range of areas, indicating Tesla’s interest in exploring opportunities beyond cars alone.

While Tesla did not provide an immediate response to Reuters’ request for comment, the discussions represent a notable shift in Tesla’s stance. Previously, the company focused on seeking lower import taxes on cars, but now it seems they are eager to produce vehicles locally. The Indian government, on the other hand, is keen on Tesla manufacturing cars within the country to promote local production.

Tesla’s manufacturing presence outside the United States currently includes a plant in Shanghai, which is their largest factory worldwide, and another one in Brandenburg, Germany. With India emerging as a major market for electric vehicles, Tesla’s potential entry into the Indian market holds great significance.
