The first Tesla Model Y refresh has finally found its way to Florida, and I had a chance to get an unobstructed feel for the new Model Y, and having had 2 Model Y’s previously, including the very first one ever made (first production run in 2020), I was anxious to see where this Model Y differs and where it is mostly the same as the existing Model Y we are used to today.

Being able to get so much time with the Model Y was great as I was able to get really detailed with my overview on the car. I also brought a tape measure with me to get a better feel for some of the specific spaces in the car and how they compare to the existing Model Y platform.

The Model Y was the best selling car in 2023, and allegedly the best selling car in 2024. The Model Y has been an absolute hit across the globe, and given its size, range, tech and price, it’s not really a surprise. Following its launch in 2020, there have been some modest updates, but now it is time for the next generation Tesla Model Y to introduce itself to the world.

The refresh Model Y will be launching in March under the Launch Series moniker. This Launch Series Model Y will come with all options included, but also comes with the full price of a loaded up Model Y. The only configuration will be a Long Range AWD version, and all options are included in the price, even FSD.

Much like the launch of the Cybertruck, this version will come with everything without the ability to remove options to save money. The difference though seems that you will be able to decide what options you want, all for the same price. It will come included with any of 4 colors, 20" wheels, tow hitch, white interior, FSD and even acceleration boost. All this plus some unique Launch Series badging and trim throughout the car.

With a price tag of $59,990 before tax credits, this is not a cheap Model Y. That said, if you were to equip the currently available Model Y LR AWD the same, it would be the same price in Stealth Gray, and up to $2k cheaper in any other color. So the pricing is actually fair given the current prices, but you dont have the option to forgo things like FSD for $8k. The nice thing is that this Model Y will retain tax credit eligibility, meaning the full $7,500 EV Tax credit will bring the price down to $52,490.

Surprisingly the Launch Series will also come with acceleration boost, which is a $2k upgrade that can be added to the existing Model Y LR AWD. That acceleration boost brings this car to 4.1 sec 0-60, or 0.1 sec faster than the existing Model Y. It also comes with 320 miles of range on the standard aero wheels and 303 miles range on the 20" upgraded wheels. That 320 miles of range represents about 3% improvement in range, but when you upgrade to the 20" wheels, it is a far better improvement in range compared to previous generation wheels.

The vehicle does lose 10 mph top speed, landing at 125 MPH, due to the updated more efficient tires equipped. Suspension upgrades promise a far superior ride, and upgraded sound deadening a much quieter ride. Added features include ventilated seats, rear screen, updated front and rear fascias, powered second row, updated antenna for WiFi and Cellular, faster processing power for the screen, and updated suite of cameras for optimized FSD. Additionally the stereo promises to deliver as it always has in the past with top performance.
