The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV Is A Solid, But Expensive, Work Only EV Truck

From EV Buyers Guide.

Chevy says the future of the Silverado is electric and I [Alex] flew to Michigan to see what that means for one of the best selling trucks in America. Top line? What it means is a more expensive truck with unique features found nowhere else and plenty of unanswered questions. Let’s dive in.

What is it? The 2024 Silverado EV is *NOT* a converted Silverado like we see in the F-150 and upcoming RAM BEV. Instead, this is a ground up clean-sheet 21st century pickup truck design. Think of it as a re-imagining of what a truck could/should be. Yes, it’s a unibody truck. No, that’s not a problem. The unified battery-body-structure of the truck yields improved rigidity, more stable towing, and (likely) improved off-road capability in the upcoming off-road versions. This is distinctly different form the Ford and RAM that use the same body mated to a new EV-specific frame.

Chevy has opted not to disclose the battery capacity, but its likely the same 212 kWh battery that the Hummer truck uses, but the Silverado is much, much more efficient. Chevy says that the 24-module versions will be EPA rated for 450 miles, and although we don’t have the final numbers, highway range is likely to be over 400 miles. This is thanks to better aero and the bigger battery vs the Lightning.

Power for the work truck version will come from de-rated motors vs the consumer versions, although 510 HP and 615 lb-ft is still pretty healthy. Towing capacity has been revised up to 10,000 lbs of SAE certified towing (up from 8,000).

Speaking of power, you can off-board 10.2 kW of 120/240V AC power from the Silverado via the onboard outlets and the J1772 (charge connector) breakout box. Looking for an auto-house backup solution? Chevy doesn’t have an answer yet.

Curb weight? A whopping 8,532 pounds. Ouch. Remember that the RST will have more creature comforts and the mid-gate option which should bump weight close to 9,000 lbs.

Sooo, how much will it cost? Well, at the start $77,990 plus destination will get fleet customers the WT trim with the big battery. Not a fleet customer? Too bad, you can’t buy one. A fully-loaded RST First Edition will be $105,000. Ouch. How about the smaller battery (~167 kWh) work truck version? Only a small discount happens there putting it at $72,905.
What does that mean for the all-electric future of the Silverado? Likely higher MSRPs all around. The base model will likely start around $55,000+. What do you think? Are you team Lightning? Silverado? RAM? Cybertruck?
