The 2025.5 Volvo XC90 Is Refreshed, Not Redesigned, And That’s What Volvo Fans Want

From Alex on Autos.

Were you hoping the 2025.5 XC90 would be a hybrid EX90? I have to admit, I was sort of hoping the same thing. Instead what we’ll be getting is more than a typical refresh for Volvo, but less than a redesign. The exterior has been subtly massaged with a new grille and new headlights, but it’s still riding on the SPA1 platform that’s under the 2024 XC90’s skin. Also on the SPA1 platform is the XC90’s active safety and driver assistance tech which means no LiDAR for the best selling Volvo in America. Also: no full hybrid will be on offer which was part of the persistent rumor mill. Instead we get tweaks to the existing B5 and B6 engines with the valvetrain being reworked to run on the miller cycle for a 1MPG improvement and the 455 HP plug in hybrid system still sitting at the top of the lineup. On the inside we get a bigger LCD, a more linear themed dash and some new materials, but the bulk of the XC90 remains the same. That’s probably not a bad thing however given the impressive sales of the XC90 last year, despite it being one of the oldest options in the segment. Pricing will start at $58,450 and it should be on sale in a few months.
