Correlation is not causation. That does not make carbon dioxide (CO₂) optional.
This week the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said power-plant emissions have “no material impact on global climate change.” That sentence is false. Not controversial. False.
Here is what we actually measured.
CO₂ traps heat. Eunice Foote wrote that down in 1856. John Tyndall measured the infrared. Svante Arrhenius did the arithmetic in 1896. Satellites and ground instruments later watched less heat leaving Earth, and more heat coming back down, in carbon dioxide’s own wavelengths. That measurement has a name: spectroscopy.
Atmospheric CO₂ sat near 280 parts per million (ppm) for about eighteen centuries. 1850: about 285 ppm. 1960: 317 ppm. 2025: 427 ppm. The annual average at Mauna Loa has gone up every year since 1958. The rise rate has roughly tripled since the 1960s.
