Tulsa, at a Walmart, and these are the new Walmart-branded chargers — same Alpitronic hardware as Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging and IONNA, and a lot of them.
What’s notable is what they replace. Walmart has hosted Electrify America chargers since 2018 — that’s the Volkswagen-owned network, early to the game and, let’s say, uneven. Now Walmart is building and operating its own: 400 kW units from Alpitronic and ABB, every stall with both NACS and CCS1, thousands planned across Walmart and Sam’s Club by 2030.
That noise you hear, by the way, is my car, not the charger. It’s the cooling system working to manage the heat that comes with pulling this much power.
The headline is that Walmart is spending real money on top-notch charging across an enormous footprint — around 90% of Americans live within ten miles of a Walmart or a Sam’s Club. And because it’s Walmart, with the logistics operation to match, they’re putting these in at blinding speed. By some counts they’re now the fastest-growing charging network in the country outside Tesla.
Tom Moloughney at State of Charge did a good deep-dive on this build-out — worth your time.
