Why America WON’T Go Full EV Anytime Soon

From The Duke of Middleville.

Why won’t America switch to EVs as fast as Europe, China, or other parts of the world?

In this video, I break down the real reasons America will likely be slow to adopt electric vehicles — and why that may not be a bad thing. This conversation is much bigger than range, charging speed, battery replacement, or gas prices. America isn’t just being asked to switch cars. America is being asked to change an entire system built around gasoline, oil, gas stations, mechanics, dealerships, household budgets, trucks, SUVs, public charging, home charging, national security, and the way Americans actually live.

We’ll look at why EV adoption in the United States is different from Europe, Australia, China, and Canada. Europe has higher gas prices, denser cities, smaller vehicles, and stronger pressure to reduce oil dependence. Australia and much of Europe also have 230–240 volt household outlets, making basic EV charging more useful than the 120-volt outlets most Americans use. China is pushing EVs as part of a national industrial strategy to dominate batteries, manufacturing, and the global electric vehicle market.

But America is different. We have cheaper gasoline, longer driving distances, a huge domestic oil industry, more trucks and SUVs, weaker household safety nets, more renters without home charging, and a transportation system built around personal vehicles.

By the end of this video, I explain why America’s EV transition may look a lot like the metric system. America never fully switched to metric, but we integrated it where it made sense. EVs may follow the same path. Gasoline vehicles, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles may coexist for a long time while the balance slowly shifts.

This is a balanced breakdown of why America won’t switch to EVs quickly — and why slower may actually be the most realistic path.
