The invention of the automobile forever changed America. For the past five days, I’ve been driving Route 66 to celebrate its centennial, alongside America’s 250th birthday, in two iconic vehicles: a Shelby GT350 representing the road’s storied past, and a Rivian R1S pointing towards its future.

This is all thanks to Bosch, who sponsored this road trip, and the timing couldn’t be more fitting. Not only does Route 66 turn 100 this year, but so does Bosch’s wiper blade, which they first introduced in 1926.

As we complete Route 66, finishing out the second half of the trip, we’ll progress through 10 more of the most iconic automotive innovations from the past century, starting where we left off in 1976, when horsepower, fuel economy, and the computer age all began to surge.
