Tesla Has a New Challenger… Hyundai Just Took #2 in EV Sales!

From The EV Geek.

Tesla may still dominate the U.S. EV market, but the battle for second place just got VERY interesting.

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is now America’s best-selling non-Tesla EV, with 20,730 units sold in the first half of 2026 — and unlike many of its competitors, sales are actually up 9% year over year.

Meanwhile, the Chevy Equinox EV has fallen to 16,249 sales, Toyota’s bZ reached 17,553, and Ford’s Mustang Mach-E managed 11,632 through the first half of the year.

So what is Hyundai doing differently?

The 2026 IONIQ 5 starts at $35,000 before destination, offers up to 318 miles of EPA-estimated range, and features a native NACS port for access to Tesla Superchargers.

The big question is: Can Hyundai keep the #2 spot as the next generation of affordable EVs arrives?

Would you choose an IONIQ 5 over a Tesla Model Y, Rivian R2, or another electric SUV? Let us know in the comments!
