Autonomous Vehicle Technology: Is It A Distraction? (Updates on Comma, OPGM, Cruise, and Level 3)

From Transport Evolved.

2023 has been full of investment in and development of semi-autonomous vehicle technology, mostly level 2 – but with some level 3 capabilities thrown into the mix.

It’s also been a year of broken promises from numerous autonomous vehicle startups, mainstream automakers, and newer companies wanting to revolutionize the way we travel.

So today, we’re giving you a bit of a mass update on our own use of ADAS Level 2 systems (Comma 3 running OPGM), explain what happened at Cruise AI recently, and ask if we’re using semi-autonomous technology all wrong.

00:00 – Introduction
01:39 – Some reminders about what OPGM and Comma 3 is – and isn’t.
03:14 – OPGM (like all ADAS) isn’t perfect
05:02 – Thoughts on current OPGM build (as of time of filming)
06:11 – Awareness and things Comma, OPGM, Open Pilot can’t do well yet
07:06 – An update on Cruise and its CEO, co-founder departures
10:32 – Motorcycles, autonomous vehicles
12:30 – BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Level 3 operation and restrictions
13:22 – We suck in heavy traffic
14:08 – Limitations of systems = reduced speed of operation
15:35 – There’s a big difference between Level 3 and Level 2
16:46 – …But we’re being distracted by Semi-Autonomous tech
18:18 – Are we making up for poor driving with autonomous tech?
18:41 – Reducing accidents is more than autonomous vehicles
20:49 – Concluding Thoughts
24:45 – Thanks, and Goodbye!
