Tesla has kicked off the 11th price change of 2023 as of last night. This latest price change affects the Tesla Model Y. The Tesla Model 3, Model S and Model X were spared of any changes this time and remain at previous prices.
Prices for the Model Y AWD was the only trim to be impacted this time with a models $250 increase. While seemingly a small increase, it is telling that the Model Y AWD does have the longest lead time of any Tesla at this moment. Regardless of spec or model, the Model Y AWD is the most constrained trim at Tesla. It could be a reflection of limited capacity as Giga Texas continues to ramp, or it could be that demand is highest for the AWD. It is likely a combination of both of these factors.
Due to the latest update from Tesla reflecting that all Tesla Model 3 and Model Y trims now qualify for the full $7,500 EV Tax Credit, demand has already started to pick up and is likely to continue. With this, Tesla will be exercising their dynamic pricing strategy and will likely have impacts on prices throughout the rest of 2023. It is likely that demand for the Model 3 will stay low until Project Highland is complete (Model 3 refresh), but the Model Y continues to be the highest demand Tesla and will continue to be so until Project Juniper (Model Y refresh) gets closer.
We also just had a leaked video showing what appears to be a Model 3 or Model Y seat, but this one is special. This particular seat has perforations in the vegan leather, which is an indication of potentially coming with cooled seats very soon. If true, it would be counterintuitive to Tesla’s stated goals with the refresh, which is to cut costs. Perhaps this one feature was the most requested from buyers and Tesla relented.
Until the refresh projects for the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are complete, this year will be an up and down pricing game. Following that the next big shift will be when the $25k Tesla from Mexico starts shipping some time in 2025.
