Tesla just rolled out their 16th price change of 2023, and this time, the Tesla Model Y is looking at a small increase, which offsets some of the decrease we saw just 2 weeks ago. PLUS Tesla just released a brand new color available now!
Tesla just reduced prices 2 weeks ago on the Model Y and Model 3. In those decreases, we started seeing the lowest prices ever on the Model Y trims, except for Model Y RWD. On the Model 3, all but the RWD Model 3 also saw their lowest prices. These continued price decreases have helped to make the Model Y and Model 3 more affordable than ever. However, the Model Y LR AWD just had an increase, and although it is minor, it may be an indication of demand as we look to the end of the year.
In addition, last week, the Model X Plaid did receive a $5,000 increase, which is an increase we have been waiting to see for 8 or 9 months now. When Tesla drastically reduced prices at the beginning of 2023, the Model S and Model X Plaid were lowered to the same price at $89,990. Although it doesn’t make sense that the Model X would be the same price as the Model S, it has been that way for at least 8 months now. Finally this evening Tesla has made changes to separate the 2 and now prices the Model X Plaid at a 5k premium over the Model S Plaid.
Another big development this evening is that Tesla has officially released a new color, and it is available now for order. Although limited to the Model S and Model X for now, the Stealth Grey that was debuted in Europe last month on the refresh Highland Model 3, is now available to order on the Model S and Model X here in North America. There were some questions about if this new color would make its way over to North America with the launch of the refresh Model 3 here, but there had been no sign of what to expect.
It is very likely, although not confirmed, that the new Stealth Grey will indeed find its way into the refresh Model 3 and likely the refresh Model Y here in North America. Seeing the Model S and Model X get this new color is a good sign as it shows the color can be produced in Fremont, which is the most restricted paint shop of Teslas facilities.
As we look to the last 2 months of the year, there is a lot in the air. Tesla is under pressure to deliver on their promise of 1.8M vehicle deliveries. To do this, Tesla will need to beat their previous quarter delivery record of 265k vehicles by nearly 10k deliveries. This only represents 2.1% increase, and the line upgrades that occurred in September should help support this goal.
In addition, there is uncertainty around the qualification of the Model 3 and Model Y of the full $7,500 EV tax credit starting January 1st, 2024. The likelihood of the Model 3 losing some, or all of the credit seems likely and the Model Y may also be at risk. This risk will surly drive demand as we close out the end of the year and people rush to ensure their full tax credit qualification in 2023.
