Charging W/ Tesla Mobile Connector on 120V Outlet?? Don’t Let Cheap Outlets Burn You!!

Several months ago I plugged in an extra Tesla Mobile Connector to a dedicated outlet in our garage. This Tesla mobile connector (sometimes referred to as a charger), was plugged into a standard wall outlet with the standard adapter that comes with the Mobile Connector.

What I didn’t know, or even think to look for, was that our house was built with hardware that was not up to the task. This house is only 1 year old, meaning, this isn’t old worn out equipment. Additionally, the Tesla Mobile Connector was plugged in and left there, not being frequently plugged and unplugged.

I just happened to be moving things around in the garage when I unplugged the Tesla Connector and realized that there was obviously damage on the surface of the receptacle due to heat. Further investigation led me to understand that this outlet is dedicated on its own circuit, which is a 20 amp circuit, and the outlet is a 15 amp receptacle. Although that is not a code violation since it is a duplex style outlet, it is seriously short of the performance requirements I am putting on it.

When you plug in your Tesla to the Mobile Connector using just the 120 adapter, the car will limit itself to 12 amps. But, that 12 amps is a continuous load, in most cases well over 24 hours. This constant draw on the outlet will certainly put more wear on the receptacle, but apparently, most off the shelf receptacles are not designed even for this much lighter charging duty the Tesla is asking for.

Due to this, I have resorted to an Industrial grade receptacle in 20amp to replace. This gives me two distinct advantages. Number 1 it allows me to be pulling constant current much lower to the threshold than at 15 amps. 2 it comes engineered to stand up to much more use and abuse than a standard sub $1 receptacle.

The biggest problem here is education. Even after a failure on a 14-50 outlet that was not designed for constant use, I still never would have thought to look into the standard outlets in my garage. I feel pretty well educated and in the know on this stuff, and even I didn’t know this was a risk of happening. How would an average consumer know to look for this? They shouldn’t, and thats where we need to identify opportunities to make homes safer and fool proof.

This video is to demonstrate the risk of standard outlets being used frequently with a Tesla Mobile connector. If you are doing this, please look at your outlets and see if they need to be upgraded to ensure you have a safe setup.
