Tesla reported blowout earnings this week, but its biggest growth driver wasn’t cars or robots. Its energy business grew by 52% year over year, earning over $7 billion in revenue so far in 2024. Elon Musk said on Tesla’s earnings call that the energy unit was "growing like wildfire."

Tesla Energy deployed 6.9 GWh of energy storage products in the third quarter of 2024. With these results, the company has already exceeded its full year 2023 energy deployments, with one whole quarter left in 2024. While Tesla Energy’s 6.9 GWh worth of deployments in Q3 2024 are lower than Q2 2024’s 9.4 GWh, it remains extremely impressive. It is, if any, still the highest energy deployments in the third quarter by Tesla Energy to date.

Tesla Energy already exceeded FY 2023’s battery deployments–and there’s still one quarter left

There has been an extraordinary increase in battery storage installations in the US over the past several years, a trend that’s transforming the nation’s power grid. Altogether, the US has added over 20 gigawatts of battery storage capacity to its electric grid since 2020, according to recent data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

The global energy storage market almost tripled in 2023, the largest year-on-year gain on record. Growth is set against the backdrop of the lowest-ever prices, especially in China where turnkey energy storage system costs in February were 43% lower than a year ago at a record low of $115 per kilowatt-hour for two-hour energy storage systems.
