Apple in February 2024 canceled the Apple Car project and has ceased all work on an autonomous, electric vehicle. Apple no longer intends to come out with an Apple Car. The approximately 2,000 employees working on the car were reassigned to Apple’s generative AI team, laid off, or sent to other divisions within the company.

Chinese Apple rival Xiaomi’s big bet on EVs looks like it is paying off. The SU7 EV has proven a hit in China, and even attracted praise from Ford CEO Jim Farley. The tech giant said it surpassed its 100,000 annual sales target for the SU7 by November.

In the race to catch Tesla, some have underestimated the Silicon Valley automaker. William Boston reports in the Wall Street Journal, “For years, industry leaders and analysts pointed to the German [automakers] as evidence that, once unleashed, the old guard’s raw financial power paired with decades of engineering excellence would make short work of Elon Musk’s scrappy startup.”
Cariad, the software division of Volkswagen Group, has been mired in controversy since its beginning. It was first created by former CEO Herbert Diess, who could see that having Porsche, Audi, Bentley, Volkswagen, and the other brands within the group all developing their own software platforms would be an inefficient use of resources. Better to create a separate division that would develop a common system that would serve the needs of all the companies in the vast Volkswagen empire.
