Jaguar F-Type 75 review – one final drive in Jag’s sports car
Mercedes doesn’t launch a new SL very often so when it does, the world takes notice.
The SL, or sport light, burst onto the scene 70 years ago in 1954. That first car, the Gullwing 300SL was effectively a road going version of the W194 racing car, and over the next seven decades the SL has transformed from an elegant racer for the road to a full-on luxury GT drop-top.
It’s fair to say that over the years the words sporty and light were sort of forgotten about. The previous SL, the R231, was neither of those things, it always reminded me of a lower, less practical version of one Merc’s saloons. But this time around though, Mercedes promises the SL is back on form.
That’s because Mercedes has handed the SL over to AMG. Built alongside the new Mercedes-AMG GT, the new Mercedes-AMG SL couId well be a return to form . I take it for a drive to find out.
