It barely seems believable that the Hyundai IONIQ 5 arrived on the scene as long ago as 2021. In that time, the Korean five-seater has established itself as one of the best all-round long-range electric cars in the business. Is it still a great option for drivers looking to make the switch to electric?
To find our, we’ve put the 2025 model to the test. The updated model has received the biggest package of improvements to date. Externally, it features refreshed front and rear bumpers, new 19-inch and 20-inch alloy wheel designs, and a redesigned front LED V-garnish. Practical additions include an extended rear spoiler and a rear wiper to improve visibility. Two new paint colours, Meta Blue Pearl and Ultimate Red, expand the palette to 11 options.
Inside, the IONIQ 5 offers a spacious cabin, thanks to its dedicated electric vehicle platform, which provides a longer wheelbase and flatter floor. This design creates a more comfortable and versatile interior space.
Performance-wise, the IONIQ 5 is available with two battery options in the UK: a 63kWh battery offering up to 273 miles of range, and a larger 84kWh unit extending the range to approximately 354 miles. The entry-level model comes with a 168bhp rear motor, achieving 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds. The all-wheel-drive variant, equipped with dual motors producing a combined 321bhp, accelerates from 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds.
Technical improvements include the Intelligent Front-Lighting System (IFS) with LED headlights that adapt to road conditions, enhancing nighttime safety. The updated IONIQ 5 also offers video-based Digital Side Mirrors and a Digital Centre Mirror, providing clearer, wider-angle visibility in various weather conditions.
Safety features have been bolstered with the inclusion of seven airbags, including a driver’s seat centre-side airbag designed to reduce head injuries from passenger collisions. Advanced driver assistance systems, such as the Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM) and Surround View Monitor (SVM), further enhance driver awareness and safety.
