Tesla Cybertruck Towing Cybertruck Cross Country!! 2,400 Mile Road Trip Towing 10k Lbs.

From Bearded Tesla Guy.

My Tesla Cybertruck delivery was a miracle all in itself. It was a recipe of "right place at the right time" and I was so fortunate to be able to take delivery of my brand new Foundation Series Cybertruck while I was in Salt Lake City picking up another Tesla Cybertruck that needed to be delivered to Florida.

With 2 Cybertrucks in hand, the decision was quickly made to tow my Cybertruck with the other Cybertruck that I was supposed to drive to Florida anyways. We had a trailer, we had the Cybertruck, all we had to do was deliver the duo 2,400 miles away in Central Florida.

The original trip was planned to pick up the EVject Cybertruck in Salt Lake City and deliver it to Orlando, FL for a Make A Wish event. This was a simple 2,400 mile trip, although it was with the new Tesla Cybertruck and would be a great opportunity to learn about the road tripping capabilities of the next generation Tesla. Little did any of us know, we would actually have the chance to tow nearly the full towing capacity of the Cybertruck all the way across the country.

Coming in at 9,546 lbs, this load is near the top of the towing capacity of the truck, which is 11,000 lbs. With plenty of experience towing over the years, I felt comfortable with the setup and getting the truck loaded, secured and balanced on the trailer was easy enough. After getting acquainted with the pre-sets for tow mode on the Cybertruck, it was time to set off across the country.

What I learned very quickly on this trip is that the middle of this country lacks volume, and modern chargers. Although Tesla boasts the most reliable charging network, which was once again realized on this road trip, in the middle of the country, its mostly V2 (150 kW max) and/or spaced too far out to be able to charge less at each stop. Because of this, I was needing to charge between 90 and 100% for most of the trip, certainly the first half.

The things I thought I wouldn’t like about the Cybertruck for towing ended up being some of the shining features of the truck. For starters, I really thought 4 wheel steer was going to be super awkward backing a trailer, but it turned out to be amazing at backing a trailer, and even more amazing at the tight turning radius this thing was capable of. No other truck I have ever towed with could come close to the maneuverability of this truck.

Next, I wasn’t so sure about the trailer brake situation with the Cybertruck. But it turns out that having the manual brake set to the right scroll wheel on the Cybertruck was actually amazing and super convenient. When you think about it, a traditional trailer brake has a manual toggle but it is a reach away from the steering wheel. On the Cybertruck, it’s right there on the wheel, meaning it’s easy to get to and effective.

I was unfortunately met with bad weather pretty much the whole trip, and coupled with climbing mountains numerous times, the range was less than I had expected. That said, overall the range was a theoretical 125-ish miles on average. Some stretches more, some stretches less. I believe my best stretch of the trip would have been the equivalent of 140 miles range at 100%.

Although I was towing near the top end of the capacity, I was hoping to see the bottom end of range closer to 150 miles. Taking away the head winds and mountains, I think the Cybertruck was certainly capable of getting at least 150 miles on a charge, but the more important thing I discovered on this trip was having accessible chargers for towing, at 60-ish miles apart, was more important than range. Charging for an hour or so at every stop was extremely painful, and took my usual 1k miles per day all the way down to about 600 miles a day tops.

All things considered, we still have a ways to go before long distance towing with EV’s is convenient. If it’s shorter distance, there’s no other truck I would rather tow with than the highly maneuverable, powerful, and capable Tesla Cybertruck!
