Vauxhall has promised an electric version of every car in its range, and we’ve now seem them all – except one. Now it’s time to see the last piece in its puzzle and the flagship of the brand’s line up – the new Grandland….

Last year, Vauxhall revealed a really pretty concept car called the Experimental. It was a bit too bonkers for production, but there are a lot of the elements which have been translated into this car, the new Grandland.

It’s not quite as swoopy, but it does have a new face of Vauxhalls: a 3D version of the ‘Vizor’ we’ve seen before and an illuminated Vauxhall Griffin logo. These haven’t been legal in Europe before because there was a worry that you might be mistaken for a motorbike, but they now are allowed.

Talking of firsts – the Grandland is the first to use Vauxhall’s new ‘Compass’ design direction, with a sort of hot cross bun effect on the lights and creases at front and rear. Look at the light bars and bodywork.

The Grandland is the first Vauxhall based on the same ‘platform’ as the Peugeot 3008 which Ginny drove a month ago. As a result, it has a very similar mechanical layout. Customers will have two drivetrain choices. The cheapest will have a 207bhp, front motor and a 73kWh battery, giving a range of around 325 miles. A twin-motor, four-wheel-drive will boost the total output to 321bhp but is expected to have the same range, due to its ability to capture more regen energy under braking. Clever. The range topper will have a massive 98kWh battery, taking the range to a whopping 435 miles.

Charging to 80% will take around 26 minutes from a DC rapid charger. There will also be a Plug-in Hybrid offering around 53 all-electric miles of range. And a pure petrol version if you want to be old-fashioned about it….
