Lucid might not be a familiar name, but the company has Tesla in its sights. The new Gravity could bring down the Model X, with stunning performance from an SUV that can seat up to seven adults and has a range of over 440 miles.

The company was started by Tesla’s former Chief Engineer, and the brand’s first car, the Air, is basically a better looking, better driving and generally more impressive version of the Model S.

The Gravity is its second model and is likely to be the biggest seller. It’s a large SUV with three rows of seats and it cleverly manages to avoid being a cube on wheels with a sleeker aerodynamic shape that has low drag coefficient which helps with overall efficiency.

Lucid says the official range will be over 440 miles, they aren’t giving details of the size of the battery but do say that the pack is around half the size of the competition, which will keep the overall weight of the car down making it more sustainable.

And while this might be a supersized SUV it’s also capable of supercar performance and can accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than 3.5 seconds.

Technology includes a clever suspension system called Zero Gravity, which automatically adapts to various conditions, and the suspension can also be raised to maximise off-road capability or lowered to optimise the performance and range.

Its motors are the most power-dense EV motors in production globally and it comes with 900V charging capability which will make it one of the fastest charging systems around. You’ll be able to add 200 miles of range in about 15 minutes when you’re hooked up to a 350 kW DC fast charger.

The Gravity SUV set to go on sale next year. Lucid is currently US focused but it has opened ‘retail studios’ in Germany and Norway and UK sales are promised to start at some point.
