Toyota has been very reticent to bring a fully-electric vehicle to market, despite selling two very competent all-electric versions of its RAV4 EV crossover.

Now it’s playing catch up to other automakers and has its first all-electric model to be built in a decade: the 2024 Toyota BZ4X, a car that’s based on the same eTNGa platform as the Lexus 450e and Subaru Solterra.

But given Toyota’s historical attitude toward electric vehicles and some pretty poor press coverage of this car’s launch, is it really as bad as everyone says?

We take it out – and discover that for some drivers, it might be a smart choice.
